Mobile Safari marketshare increases, still tiny

September 2nd, 2008 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in software

CNET is reporting that the iPhone’s share of the web browser market is approaching one third of a percent, quite a leap from its previous mark of one fifth of a percent.  The recent introduction of 3G network supported is attributed to the increase. This occurs as Linux-based OS’s now account for nearly 1% of all browsing, and Mac-based browsers have grown to 7.86%.

The only platform/browser combination experiencing a decrease is Windows running IE, revealing that a growing number of Windows users have decided to do their surfing with Firefox or Safari. The availability of better database application tools for non-IE browsers, combined with an industry shift to Flash, has made the browsing public less reliant upon IE-only technologies like ActiveX for enhanced browser functionality. As this trend continues, expect Safari and iPhone browser share to further increase.

Make your Wordpress blog iPhone-friendly

August 13th, 2008 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in software

Getting a blog up and running on Wordpress is pretty easy.  And there are even templates that will make it iPhone-friendly.  But it’s a real trick to get your blog to be both desktop-friendly AND iPhone-friendly.  That’s why we’re glad ContentRobot came up with a plug-in/theme combination that does exactly that.  Your desktop visitors see your regular theme, and your iPhone visitors see an iPhone-formatted page. Too cool.

With a slight bit of hacking, you can display the iPhone-formatted version on any mobile browser, and the result looks tons better on my Nokia N95 than the a standard, bulky desktop theme. Hack away!
