Go jet-skiing (on your iPhone)

March 1st, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in games

It seems there’s no shortage of racing games for the iPhone.  The tilt control alone makes for a very Wii-like racing experience on the iPhone and iPod Touch. In fact, we keep hoping somebody will do an Excite Truck clone for the iPhone. Excite Truck is, in my opinion, still the best game for the Wii.

But in the meantime, we’ll settle for Aqua Moto Racing Lite, a unique offering that simulates misty, tropical jet-skiing races. The developer bills it as the ultimate test of your jet-skiing skills.  In lieu of heading to south Florida for some real-life jet ski action, we’ll take it.

SlotzRacer’s New Track Editor is a blast

January 23rd, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in games, software

Anybody who grew up in the eighties had a slot car racing set and a real good pink rubber eraser for cleaning the electric contacts rails on the track.  Of course, I never owned a set that was four lanes wide like the virtual ones seen here.

Those of us with an itch for slot car racing can relive the feeling again with FreeVerse’s latest iPhone game, SlotzRacer, and thanks to FreeVerse’s programmers–we can now design our own tracks! Awesome.  Figure 8 crashjump, here we come.

uStream viewer for your iPhone: Is your pocket filled with fun yet?

January 21st, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in software

Watching video on the iPod Touch or iPhone is far from ideal–but it’s fun to burn the time while waiting for a doctor’s appointment or during a lonely lunch hour.  Naturally, YouTube is many iPhone geeks’ first resort because it’s bundled with every iPhone and iPod Touch.

Today, though, uStream’s iPhone/iPod video viewer app showed up on the appstore, and it looks promising.  The content is all across the board here. Some of it is not exactly video material (like a webcam inside of a radio booth during a talk show), but a lot of it is excellent, if NPR-esque, stuff.

The uStream client for iPhone does not (yet) allow broadcasting, and the uStream app, like Joost, is incapable of using 3G. Check it out.

By all accounts, Apple music event a disappointment, but iPhone firmware coming Sept 13

September 10th, 2008 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in business, camera, hardware

But there were some bright spots. Mainly, the addition of high definition television content to iTunes, which paves the way for more Apple TV sales, and of course, the addition of NBC-originated content to iTunes. But the new iPods, while cool, weren’t quite the leap forward many were expecting.  They did add some nifty apps, like a workout tool co-branded with Nike.

Maybe the most significant addition to Apple’s music empire is this new Genius List feature, which takes a feather out of Pandora’s cap, creating playlists that suggest music based on the preferences of the user.  Nearly lost in all that hype was the detail that a new bug fix for iPhone firmware should be hitting the Net on September 13, according to Steve Jobs.

Here’s hoping the new firmware has a video camera and media messaging.
