Micro-projector coming to iPhone, iPod?

July 6th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in hardware

Forget about battery life and brightness for a moment and think about how helpful (or just plain cool) it would be to have a video projector built-in to your iPhone or iPod.  According to Digitimes, a pretty reputable tech manufacturing rag, Apple has commissioned Foxconn (one of the companies responsible for making current iPods and iPhones) to develop the technology to do just such a thing.  According to the quoted source,  projector-enabled sets will be available for the end of 2009.  Almost makes you wish you hadn’t re-upped with AT&T to get that 3gS doesn’t it?

eBay Mobile hits version 1.4

July 1st, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in services, software

Lest you lose track of that one-of-a-kind Simpsons collectable you’ve been eyeballing, eBay’s iPhone app might just be worth your while.  Here’s eBay’s description of the new version of eBay for the iPhone:

eBay Mobile… Now eBay buyers and sellers have The World’s Online Marketplace at their fingertips, wherever they go. The new eBay application for the iPhone is specially designed to run natively on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Using a streamlined interface that’s as elegant as it is practical, eBay members can search, bid, and check their activity on the go. Buyers can sneak in that last-minute bid on a hard-to-find item, sellers can check on their sales, and everyone can act on time-sensitive information on the spot without a computer. eBay is now open for business anytime, anywhere on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Top 10 Most Uncool iPhone Apps

March 6th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in games, software

Well, the app store has been on line for a while now, and we’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly, and the just plain silly.  It’s amazing to watch the skills of iPhone coders–and to note the range in quality from really useful all the way down to absolutely goofy. Here’s our list of the 10 goofiest (or most useless) iPhone apps.

10. Polo Ralph Lauren Collection - As if it’s not painful enough shopping for overpriced clothing! The one good thing about this app is that, unlike the pink, too-small golf shirts that are so popular right now, it’s free.  For those without a Ralph Lauren store in the neighborhood, of course.

9. Cooking Mama for iPhone - One of the killer app launch titles for the Nintendo Wii console a few years ago, Cooking Mama Cook-Off was fun simply because of its immensely pleasing absurdity.  The laughably poor English voice recordings in the game almost singularly made it worth playing, at least in our book. Gone from the iPhone version are the Engrish voices as well as most of the fun.  Oh, and the game is easy to beat in just under an hour.  Serious Cooking Mamas need not download this waste of time. PETA’s ridiculous parody of the title is ostensibly more fun–though not by much.

Kindle for iPhone lets you read e-books

March 4th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in services, software

All kidding aside, the Kindle, Amazon’s electronic book reading device, has kindled a ton of excitement among bloggers lately.  So much, in fact, that one had to wonder if it would be on Amazon’s agenda to support the iPhone with their Kindle technology.  Of course, common sense prevailed and Amazon widely realized that, when you have an iPhone in your pocket, you probably aren’t going to be partial to carrying around a second device just for book-reading.  Anyway, the Kindle app is here–so check it out.

Watch CBS TV on your iPhone

March 2nd, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Yup, CBS is now streaming a handful of shows on its iPhone app, TV.com.  Got a long airport layover? Why not watch Star Trek or Letterman?   Or wait for your mom to grocery shop in the car with CSI:Miami. The great thing–especially when compared to Joost–is that TV.com works over 3G, so you don’t need to be within range of a WiFi access point.  We’d keep writing, but we’re off to see if we can get The Price is Right.
