February 9th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in games, software

Digital Illusions’ classic (and I stress classic) pinball simulation for teh Amiga–Pinball Dreams–has been resurrected to amazing effect on the iPhone/iPod Touch.  Serious gamers will remember burning many, many hours during the nineties play what many argue is the greatest Amiga game of all time.  $5.99 on the app store.  Now go play pinball.

Doodle Kids: Finger-painting on your iPhone

February 6th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in software

An app (apparently) developed by a 9-year-old in good ole Xcode, Doodle Kids allows you to finger paint on your iPhone.  Missing in the hubbub over the youthfulness of this app’s author is the fact that it’s actually really fun to paint on the iPhone’s touch screen.  Grab it. The random-colored visual effect of doodling is not unlike those multi-colored “magic pens” you see see on daytime TV ads.

Your iPhone can “X-Ray” but not Photo-message

January 23rd, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in games, software

If you’ve got the 99-cent treasure, Amazing X-Ray FX, from the app-store, you’ve got all the bar-side, friend-fooling silly-ness you’ll need.  But you still won’t be able to shoot video or photo-message with your iPhone.

Completely fool your friends into thinking your iPhone or iPod touch doubles as an amazingly cool hand X-Ray machine.

Be blown away by just how realistic the X-Ray looks, an effect achieved by a multi-layering technique of ultra hi-res Xray images, subtly moving in 3D like phased sync with real-time movements you control (accelerometer sensor based).

You will swear this is the real deal.

Wow. We’re sold.  I’m going to download this one right now.  This should be a huge hit with the junior high school set.

Bullet ballistics and sniping… iPhone style?

January 22nd, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in news, software

Like to shoot?  Like to shoot from a distance?  Well, Knight Armaments offers a custom-built iPhone application that can make all the necessary calculations for just the right “special delivery”.

Obviously, this type of application is being used to court attention from the armed services and military manufacturers (especially with the sweet ruggedized iPhone case and rifle mounting hardware seen here), seeing as how sniping isn’t a sport and the likeliest use for this technology is either battlefield or covert assassination. This particular app is $11.99 at the app store, and is intended for use with Knight rifles only.

A more generic sniping application is called iSnipe, and it sells for half as much.  Supposedly, it works with many different guns, not just Knight’s.  Happy hunting.

PocketGuitar: More convenient but less fun than the real thing

January 22nd, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in software

Shinya Kasatani’s PocketGuitar app, which simulates the strumming and fretting action of a guitar on your iPhone or iPod Touch, has been revved with several important bug fixes having to do with pressing and releasing of strings.  We love that you can play several types of guitar simulations, from acoustic to electric to ukelele. As fun as this little app is (like our other favorite music app, Ocarina), the novelty does wear off unless you have a specific idea in mind–like figuring out new chords on your daily busride or spicing up the local jam night.
