The Top 10 Most Uncool iPhone Apps

March 6th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in games, software

Well, the app store has been on line for a while now, and we’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly, and the just plain silly.  It’s amazing to watch the skills of iPhone coders–and to note the range in quality from really useful all the way down to absolutely goofy. Here’s our list of the 10 goofiest (or most useless) iPhone apps.

10. Polo Ralph Lauren Collection - As if it’s not painful enough shopping for overpriced clothing! The one good thing about this app is that, unlike the pink, too-small golf shirts that are so popular right now, it’s free.  For those without a Ralph Lauren store in the neighborhood, of course.

9. Cooking Mama for iPhone - One of the killer app launch titles for the Nintendo Wii console a few years ago, Cooking Mama Cook-Off was fun simply because of its immensely pleasing absurdity.  The laughably poor English voice recordings in the game almost singularly made it worth playing, at least in our book. Gone from the iPhone version are the Engrish voices as well as most of the fun.  Oh, and the game is easy to beat in just under an hour.  Serious Cooking Mamas need not download this waste of time. PETA’s ridiculous parody of the title is ostensibly more fun–though not by much.

Doodle Kids: Finger-painting on your iPhone

February 6th, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in software

An app (apparently) developed by a 9-year-old in good ole Xcode, Doodle Kids allows you to finger paint on your iPhone.  Missing in the hubbub over the youthfulness of this app’s author is the fact that it’s actually really fun to paint on the iPhone’s touch screen.  Grab it. The random-colored visual effect of doodling is not unlike those multi-colored “magic pens” you see see on daytime TV ads.

Listen to your RSS feeds while you drive

Textcast is a Mac OS X app that turns your favorite RSS and Atom feeds, web pages, and more into personal podcasts for your iPod or iPhone.  Add a news feed, import from Safari, or copy text into the application, and Textcast will create spoken-word audio files and send them to iTunes for upload on your iPod or iPhone.  You can choose which voice you’d like to use, too.

Add this to the list of fine utilities we’ve got in our iPhone toolbelt.

Recent iPhone discovery: iFitness manages your workout

January 22nd, 2009 by Ted | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Regular exercise is essential for becoming and staying fit. Experts recommend changing your workout routine regularly to keep your body from growing accustomed to the same old routine and to keep things interesting and enjoyable. Personal trainers can be costly though, and attempting a new exercise without assistance can lead to strain or an ineffective workout. iFitness might be the solution to both problems.

iFitness provides images of people performing over 130 exercises, sorted by body region or the exact muscle it targets.  Choose a target, tap on an exercise, and you are presented with a picture of the exercise. Double tap to flip the image and reveal clearly worded instructions on the back. You can add exercises to your custom workout list, and make several workouts for different days of the week.

Easily the handiest feature of this app is the progress tracking. Tap the log icon and easily record your progress. Your data is saved and presented to you in an easy to understand form, and can be sent to your email with just one finger tap. Why waste money on all of those separate “logging apps” that litter iTunes?

For the musician in all of us, there’s Loopy, an easy music construction app for the iPhone.  Along with Ocarina, which allows you to broadcast flute-like melodies over the net in a social community, Loopy has taken a permament spot in my iPhone music toolkit.  Check out the deets over at StudioRoll.
